You know what is funny, I myself am a female, and I currently own 4 pairs of pants outside of my work attire, and about 40 shirts. I have maybe 10 pairs of shoes, ranging from flip flops to tennis shoes to boots. I think it has to do with the emotional state of one. Maybe she is big on fashion. One thing about women, is they like to be up to date on fashion, and they rarely like to wear the same thing twice when they go out. Does she like to go clubbing? If so, she is probably like my best friend, she ALWAYS wears a new outfit. She never goes out in the same combo twice. Maybe it is an image thing. Noone really knows.

I know for me, I just love to shop. I feel like I never have enough. I buy jeans that I love then I wear them a time or two and don't really love the way the fit anymore. But they are perfectly good jeans so I can't throw them out, but I buy more. A lot of times I will buy stuff I see but don't have any wear specific to wear it. So it sits with the tags, then I've had it so long that it's too late or I am too lazy to return it so it is just taking up space in my closet.
I don't think there is a real reason for this, we are just girls, it is what we do!

Men will wear a plaid shirt with striped pants and tennis shoes. Women must have everything match from blouse to skirt to shoes to purse. As soon as something wears out there is no longer a set and the balance of the clothes is stored away.

It's about having choices. Lots and lots of choices.
On our last 6-day road trip my husband packed 2 pairs of jeans, 4 shirts, 2 pairs of shoes and an extra jacket. I packed 6 pairs of jeans, 4 pairs of leggings, 14 shirts (both long and short sleeved), 3 pair of sneakers and one pair of boots, and 2 coats. I took two purses (for a color choice), a bunch of different jewelry and hair scrunchies, 4 pairs of pajamas w/ robes and slippers, 3 extra bras, 8 pair of underwear, and socks in all colors.

Easy! First of all, if you have a multitude of stylish clothes, you will always find a new awesome combination to put together. And your clothes will last decades longer since they are never over-worn.
Another reason is that there is a lot more pressure for women to dress nicely, than for men...that is unless you are my husband. LOL, He owns the whole Master Closet (the size of some people's bedrooms), full of zanella pants, canali blazers, and designer shirts, ties, and scarves. So I guess it all depends on the person.
BDW I have every other closet in our home. ;-P

6 pairs of jeans? You are out of control mister!
Honestly not all women are like that. Sounds like your girl is a bit of a pack rat though especially if she hasn't worn some of her stuff in years.

Because women care about how they look more than men. For a woman, appearance and status is everything. If a woman has only a few shirts/pants/shoes to her name, then she feels that she cannot accurately or wholly express herself to her fullest.
You could say that a woman could express herself with only a few items of clothes - but then her mood is not always the same every day. Along with mood changes comes clothes changes. It's different every day. Women always want to look nice (believe me, I know!), and in order to achieve that she needs a lot of clothes.
However, 45 pairs of jeans is alot of clothes. When I say that a woman "needs" alot of clothes...I would say more like 15 pairs of jeans maybe. Your girlfriend is going a liiiiitle overboard.

What if is a good reason. Even "what if my size changes?"
Also, could be she needs to come down to reality and quit spending so much. How are her credit card balances? Is purchasing clothes an addiction? Garage sale or better yet ebay those extra clothes.
Remember women will always need more clothes than men like on vacations we always have more luggage than you guys. The "what if . . ." comes in and "be prepared" is a good motto.
Good luck.

I counted last night: I have 186 pairs of shoes, and tons of clothes. Why, because everything has to match and look good.
