true republic - true democracy would be akin to letting American Idol polls run the country... the founders had the intent to found what Madison and Hamilton referred to as an 'extended republic'
representitive democracy best fits this but even then you could argue that the universal sufferage that we espouse today runs counter to a true republic in the sense that the founders envisaged.

If it worked and wasnt a giant scam Id say true democracy would be what id want. Of course the chances of that happening are less then the chance there is no other lifes out there in the universe... True democracys biggest flaw is probably the fact that its so complicated its easy to rig the votes. A true republic on the other hand basicaly comes rigged for the people. So ehh...

Republic does not always have space for democracy. Good examples are China, N. Korea, Cuba. Democracy is supposed to be a system where people can have their say in a free and fair manner but still we have seen in big democracies such as the US, things have gone totally wrong and public opinions are not always listened to. Democracy is actually no more than a platform for doing politics. Democracy is not synonymous to freedom. Democracy is just another "marketing ploy" to sell people the dreams.

Given the right people each type of systerm works. No single system works for all people all the time.
