If it happens it will be one-sided, democrats with purses swinging against the republicans armed to the teeth.

(I wrote this answer for another question, but It also works for this one)
I believe if you join the republican or Democrats, you are a small minded person, and are part of the problem with this country, not the solution. These are the same people who go to the booths and pull any lever that bare there tickets name on it.For the last 60 years or so, our government has been slowly selling out the American people, no health care system, letting all our jobs go overseas, and so on.All for the mighty bureaucratic dollar. Every year you hear the same thing, how much people are sick of these, out of touch, bone heads that run our country, and every election they get voted right back in to office. How does this happen? Because the only people voting are people that belong to the these two parties, the people that want change don't vote, because they think it wont make a difference. If every one would vote, and an independent got into office, you can bet the other parties would clean up there act, or fall to the way side. People remember there are more then just the two parties that the government wants you to put into office. We could easily change the piss pour way this country is heading, easily,by not voting for, slick talking, don't give too craps about the American people, born a butt kissing career politician, and vote for someone who actually worked for a living, and actually knows what the people need, into office. We need to put someone into office with there own agenda, instead of the bureaucrats and the very few ,richest people in the world,(who are actually running this country now).......

No, no, no. It is unfathomable to envision the Dems and Republicans warring against each other (I'm talking about people in politics here--not average citizens). They're too busy making money. The American political system is adversarial by nature, and the disagreements that the respective parties have are just part of the status quo system.
Ultimately, Dems and Republicans are all the same. They both wear suits and ties to work, they both are likely white and male, and they both eat lunch together at Capital Hill, and many of them are Ivy League grads. If you want proof that Dems and Republicans get along with each other, look no further than the George HW / Bill Clinton Katrina commercials or any Presidential funeral.
As for the general population warring with each other, uh no. How often would you even see a Dem or a Republican bring themselves to violence over an issue? Let alone an all out war? People just like to listen to themselves complain, and argue, and think they're right and they're going to make a difference.

I think the question is not when both parties will start fighting each other, but when will they join together. If you vote Republican, you get more taxes, more government, and less freedom. If you vote Democrat, what do you get? More of the same! Now, if a third party or a state gets fed up enough to do something we might see another civil war, but I think diplomacy would probably fix things. Very few Americans (read: serial killers and the like) want to kill other Americans.

I think we are very divided in this nation as far as democrats and republicans go. I don't think there will be another civil war though. At least not any time soon. I think we learned a lot from the last civil war

While there might not be actual physical fighting per say, I think we're already in the middle of a civil war.
Not only with the democrats and republicans, but between all sorts of people who don't see eye to eye.

It's amazing how a label of Democrat or Republican makes everything so messy.
It doesn't matter what the right thing to do is anymore. It's about doing the opposite of your opponent just to spite them.
To answer your question, I would say it would be more of a riot/chaos than a civil war.

The war in Iraq is really a small issue. It will be over in less than 5 years. The biggest problems facing America are serious problems. China is a big problem and so are illegal aliens.

The problem in Somalia was that the Army wanted to bring heavy armor and Clinton veto'd it. Then we got the blackhawk thing and really needed the firepower but it wasn't there.

I can see the nation split into Libtardia (the east and west coastal states) and Redneckia (the 'red' states). I doubt there will be a civil war. There are no longer leaders of the stature of Abraham Lincoln around to lead us.
