Read "The Greatest Generation" by Tom Brokaw.
The link belows gives a synopsis. This book highlights the beginning of the 20th century through it's end and the milestones that occurred along with telling about the Great Men and Women of its time.

Anything by Barbara Tuchman. A terrific historian, whose work mixes the historical facts into a narrative so seductive, you may as well be reading a novel.
Among my favorite works: The Zimmerman Telegram, about the U.S. entering World War I, and A Distant Mirror, about upheavals, battles and life in the 14th century.

You need to write about a historical book?
I highly reccommend "Centennial" if you want a KICKBUTT historical story. It was written by James A. Michener, and he put years of research into his story (he uses fictional characters, but everything else is accurate).
Look into it. It's a little over 1,000 pages long, so I don't know how much time you have.
