It is software which once installed, lets you talk (as in a phone call) to other skype users for free over the Internet. It also lets you call land-line and mobile phones for a small fee. It is pretty much like a phone company, except that you need your own broadband connection and some type of headset to talk over the phone. Skype is a PC application that allows you to chat in VOICE over the Internet (and recently supports video, as well as text chat). It also has buddy lists and even supports voice calls to regular phones.
