Norton has poor detection and removal. It make a mess of your file system and registry and it bogs you computer down by eating an excessive amount of resources.
The worst part is, it seldom uninstalls properly and Norton's "Special Removal Tools" also fail to fully remove it. This all comes from someone who has done countless manual Norton uninstalls.
It's on your system now, don't mean to sound cruel, but best of luck to you... :(

You don't normally have to uninstall software in order to download new software...that sounds a little sketchy to me.
Norton is okay, I used it for a few years and then switched to AVG because, well, it's free and I'm cheap! But if you downloaded Norton for free, that sounds odd too...unless it was just a trial program.
Other reasons for your computer to be acting slow could be that it needs to be defraged or is fully of temporary files. Page Defrag is a good tool (also free, just google it) for assisting the usual Windows defrag (which is crap), and runs outside of Windows so that all of your files get done.
My favourite tool (which is also free, damn I can squeeze a penny so hard it makes the queen fart) to keep my computer running quickly and efficiently is called CrapCleaner (no word of a lie) and it will get rid of all of the files that are just filling up your computer for no reason, like temp files and things you forgot were in your garbage pail etc. You would be surprised how much crap gathers in your computer that you would never find unless you spent way to much time on your computer!
Good luck, I hope some of this information helped.
BTW, AVG also has a free spyware cleaner, and if you want to run a good (free) online anti-virus scanner on your computer, try trendmicro (gotta love google, you can find anything!) which has great program that you don't have to download (although it does not monitor your computer, and you may have to download some controls for your browser for it, it still rocks!)

Norton used to be a great product, but it is now extremely bloated. It will definitely slow your computer down. Go back to Spybot S&D and AVG.

before i answer (why download it. go to a shop and buy it. then you can keep your other software as well)
im on nortan internet security 2007. its not amazing but its a very good all rounder defender.
firewall
anti virus
anti spyware
its not crap. i use it and it dosnt slow my computer.
you could have a crappy version of it(couse you downloaded it like a fool) or your computer could just be lacking some ram. it dose take up quite a bit of ram so that could be your problem.
btw recomend you keep your previouse stuff like avg becouse nortan isnt perfect.

I have had nothing but trouble with Norton..It is exspensive and does not keep up with virus/spyware/malware out there.
I changed to PC-Cillin, it is about 45$ for a year and it works great...I had a malware called Winfixer and Norton could not find nor remove it...PC-Cillin got it out right away..
Follow up...NORTON STINKS
