I think they were amazing astronomers, and also find it interesting that Cortez came on the same day that they predicted the god Queztacoatl would come.

If it is, then it doesn't matter.

Of course not. When the first computers were programmed with a final fate of December 31, 1999 - did that mean the world was coming to an end on that date? No. It meant that they didn't think any of those computers would be used that far into the future. Same with the Mayan calendar. Consider it the first "Y2K bug".

Especially considering that some poor sap was carving the thing into stone. Mayan workers's choice: Stop carving a calendar that already reaches 500 years into the future, or continuing the backbreaking work to chip out another date ring so that people who fear the doomsday five centuries later will have something to talk about. My guess is that the carver called it a day, and went off to get a chocolate bar, some beer, and play some Wall ball.

The Mayan calendar is based on interlocking circular rings, sort of like gears. Their motion, and therefore the dates generated, are perpetual.

But if you think the world will end on that date, do me a favor and send me all your valuable stuff on December 20, 2012. You won't be needing it anyway.

Well it would take some of the pressure off renewing my mortgage etc...

I'm not convinced. They said the same thing about the year 2000. They keep predicting the end & it never comes. Until I see the sky split open & a big "Game Over" appears in the sky & God yells "That's it folks! We're done!" then I won't believe it!

Sure, I think a bunch of Mayans from hundreds of years ago knew exactly what date the world would end. Sure.

Yea, the end of the mayan calendar. I think it will pass uneventually as did every other failed apocalypse.

It's not the end of the calendar. It's the start of the 13th Baktun. the Baktuns should go to 20, and even then the calendar doesn't end, it just goes to whatever's beyond baktuns.
