The 5.17 meter (17 ft) marble statue portrays the Biblical King David at the moment that he decides to do battle with Goliath. The slingshot is held over his shoulder while the other over-sized hand holds the rock.

The point in time in which David is static and holds his slingshot over his shoulder is in the early stages of the battle. It might be a pause just before the start of the battle, or after he hit Goliath with his slingshot and before he went to behead him. It is not likely that it is after he beheaded Goliath because for that he took Goliath's sword and had to give up his slingshot. After he beheaded Goliath, he received a hero's clothes and armor to wear from Jonathan, King Saul's son.

I have seen the replica in Florence, Italy and i have also seen the real Statue of David in the museum in Italy.
*I think* that he is holding a sling shot in his hand and it is going over his shoulder. I have seen it really close but i have never thought about looking in his hand so i am not too sure.
