Read Michael Moore's book Dude, Where's My Country? It's real life and it's extremely funny. You will love it!

If you're looking for books that are sad and kill after main characters...
The boy in the striped pajamas by John Boyne
The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks
Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks

As far as realistic fiction goes you might enjoy
Sarah Dessen (The Truth About Forever, Just Listen, That Summer, This Lullaby, Someone Like You, Keeping the Moon, Dreamland)
Joan Bauer (Hope Was Here, Squashed, Rules of the Road)
Laurie Halse Anderson (Speak)

Hiya! I would suggest The time traveller's wife by Audrey Niffenegger . It is a bit sad throughout and SPOILER HERE main charcter dies at the end, which had me crying for a good part of an hour. The title attracted me at first, I never regreted it - in fact, I started reading it again as soon as I finished - it was that good. It is also a bit complicated, since the main character constantly pops in and out of present time - he meets his wife Clare when he is 36 and she is 6, and then get married when he is 30 and she is 22. Anyway, this book is unlike anything I ever read.

Try 'HMS Ullyses' for sadness. Or 'Tess of the D'Urbevilles' also sad. I agree about Pullman's trilogy....absolutely inspired. I also love the Harry Potter books, although they are not as deep. How about some Science Fantasy.........Anne Mcaffrey springs to mind as an author you might like. Have you read 'Angela's Ashes'? Real life and sad.
Hope this helps.

i also agree that his dark materials is one of the best books ever written, and i;m afraid i cant think of anything that even comes close in a similat vein...
also as some other people have uggested try some more 'classics', like wuthering heights, tess of the d'urbavilles...

Want to read a real life book read the Diary of Anne Frank. Or the story of Corrie ten Boom. Her and her family were so brave in occupied Holland

If you like dark humor and have an open mind, then read Augusten Burroughs memoirs. Running with scissors is about his childhood, and Dry is about his alcoholic years. They are hilarious, sad, and shocking! He has other books that are short stories from his life, and the only fiction he has written is Sellervision, which is great as well.

I love Jostein Gaarder books especially "Sophies World" ... a very good book to read. I always read a trilogy by Garth NIX, the books were: Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen. They were interesting, kind of like a Lord of the Rings thing, but not as boring.... Sorry, I just think LOTR drags on a bit in the books! no offence, its just my personal opinion!!
