It's quite simple. Politicians are mentally deficient. They have only 1 answer for everything: pass a law. So if they pass a dumb law, the only solution is to pass another dumb law to fix the fist one.
So, in the case of vehicles and seat belts, it's like this: They passed a law making it impossible for emergency rooms to turn people away if they can't pay. This was dumb and cost the hospitals money, so they had to pass a law making tax payers reimburse the emergency rooms. This was dumb, because people not wearing their seat belts were getting hurt, taken to the emergency room, not paying, and so costing the tax payers a ton of money. So they passed a law saying you have to wear a seat belt so you don't get hurt in a crash and go to the emergency room and force the tax payers to pay for you.
Now, the smart thing would have been to just repeal the law forcing hospitals to give away emergency room treatment for free. But, like I said at the beginning, politicians aren't that smart. So the result is a huge mess of laws trying to clean up the mess that a huge mess of laws created in the first place.

"To protect people from themselves and each other!"
Not to answer a question with a question, BUT, why is it that a motorcyclist in my state has "the option" to wear a helmet or not but the same state legislation says I'm not allowed to take the (removable) doors off my JEEP? Keep in mind that my jeep has those seat-belts AND a roll-cage, whereas a motorcycle has neither! Simple; insurance Lobbyists. Part of our premiums go to those lobbyists to right out BRIBE senators and the lot of influenced crooks in DC! The only reason motorcyclists are getting more freedom is the number of associations created for that purpose, and the fact that a lot of policy makers now have bikes and want the freedom we all deserve. To make our own decisions!

Because it's not just in your interest. Aside from the fact that it really is incredibly stupid not to wear a seatbelt (I mean WHY would anyone not do something so simple that will significantly aid your chances of survival?) if you flew through the windscreen of your vehicle you could cause further accidents - which affect other people. Also if you don't wear a seatbelt you are at significantly higher risk of serious instead of minor injury, which puts strain on whoever has to pay your medical bills.

Because as a user of public roads, paid for with taxes paid by citizens, your body becomes a projectile in a crash--and that affects other people. If you want to drive on your own private road without a seatbelt, and pay your own ambulance and hospital services completely, full-price out of pocket, then go for it.

Individual state laws. They can regulate child seats, adult seat belts, helmets for bicycles and motorcycles. It is for your own safety. An objection to it would be like a union that struck because the management made them wear safety glasses after many eye injuries. STUPID!!!

Because when you end up with a permanent disability you will live off of governmental aid and depend on tax dollars to get by.
When you don't wear a helmet you just die and there is no drawn out life as a quadriplegic to pay for.
Statistics prove it. Ask an actuary.

Primarily because the government knows that unintelligent people don't wear seatbelts, and they also don't cover themselves adequately with insurance. So, when they are involved in an accident, the taxpayers end up shelling out multmillions to care for them in institutions for the rest of their lives.

There are far more autos on the road, there are far more automobile accidents, and there are far fewer deaths with seat belts.
There comes a time when you as a person have to accept the fact that you cant make ALL the rules in life.

Because you're driving on THEIR road, with a license THEY issued you, in a car THEY registered, for one thing.
Also because the federal government tied seatbelt laws to highway spending bills.

Because if you have an accident and are seriously injured there is a huge cost to the taxpayers.
I don't care if you don't wear a seatbelt. I do care if I have to to scrape you off the road, bring you to an ER, pay disability, etc.
Why can't right-wingers understand anything?
