My family does whenever we can. Sometimes my husband gets called to work and he doesn't want us to wait to eat, so we go ahead without him. But on the days we're all together, we always eat together. Unfortunately, not all American families do this. When my husband was growing up, it was every man for himself. His mom had to work a lot of hours to make ends meet and so he learned early on to just make what he wants whenever he wants. But, my family was different. We always ate dinner together and if my siblings or I were playing outside, we would be called in and nobody would start eating until we were all there. I think it's a really good idea to do that because it's sad to say, but for most families, dinner is the only time for everyone to be together and it gives everyone a chance to talk about their day.

As a kid, I rarely had the typical dinner with the family. It's nearly impossible to sit down with parents and siblings who are always gone. My parents worked different shifts, and were never home for dinner in the evenings. As soon as I was old enough to cook for myself, that's what I did. Everybody ate at different times, because of our schedules. Now, there's just my spouse and I, and when we eat dinner together, it's usually at a restaurant on the weekends, because during the week, we're often not home at the same time during dinner.

I'm Italian-American (full blooded), and despite the stereotype of the large, close-knit Italian family, we very rarely sat down together for dinner. My mother hardly ever cooked, and didn't like making big dinners of any sort. My parents were just too busy for that sort of thing. My folks have passed on, and I still rarely bother doing any kind of major sitting down for dinner routine, unless I go out to a restaurant or something.
