As you might already know, the answer to your question about how many minutes of daylight do we gain everyday depends on where you live in the world - specifically your latitude (distance north or south of the equator). The farther you are away from the equator, the more minutes you gain every day. Also, the answer depends on the time of year. Near the solstice, the minutes of daylight in a day barely changes from one day to the next, but near the equinox it changes most rapidly!

Here you can find info for London's sunrise and sunset times:
http://www.sunrisesunset.com/calendar.asp?comb_city_info=London,%20United%20Kingdom;0;51.5;0;2&month=1&year=2007&time_type=0
If you play around on that website you might be able to get the data for your specific location.

Here's another website:

Scroll down to where it says Form B - Locations Worldwide and enter in your information to get sunrise and sunset data for an entire year.

The longest night of the year is always the winter solstice (on or around December 21 for folks north of the equator). The longest day of the year is always the summer solstice (on or around June 21 in the northern hemisphere). On the equinoxes day and night are essentially equal (September 21 and March 21, approximately).
