I have a club and it's called The Unsolved Mysteries Club, we learn about ghosts, aliens, etc. I've had a couple of children act up during it and I was thinking to have them do an one-page report on something really boring. What are some boring things to learn about?

Reading and/or writing should NEVER be used as punishments. Why do you think kids learn to hate school? One major reason is because learning is used as a punishment! I totally agree with the person who said that coming to a club meeting is a privilege, not a right. Start a "three strikes you're out" policy with the students. After their three strikes they have to leave the current meeting and skip the next one. Plan a really fun activity for the day they're gone so that they'll want to come back to the club, but with a better attitude.

Do not have them write a report --- they will learn to associate writing with negativity. Reward children that don't act up with a jolly rancher or other small candy or a sticker or pencil. If you don't behave, you don't get a reward. Take it from a mother and a teacher, rewards and positive reinforcement are much more effective than punitive measures and punishments.

If this is a voluntary club, then don't allow them to come to a meeting. Tell them that the consequence for not behaving is that they don't get to come next time. It is a privilege to come to a club, not a right.

Another solution would be to give positive rewards to the students that are behaving and doing what they are supposed to. Encourage the appropriate behavior.

I wrote a report on the ENIAC once. It was the first digital computer ever built. Reading about it was a nightmare. Writing a report about any American president would also be quite boring.

Try letting them write about something that challenges their mind, as they are probably already bored learning about things that don't exist.

Here is one that my teacher made me do and I shaped up immediately... Have them write the definition of the word "run". Have you ever seen it? Its super-long, and boring as heck.
