I haven't been able to find a job in journalism easily, and in addition, it's a very low paying field. I was wondering, what are the steps to becoming a paralegal, and would the BA I already have be helpful?

Yes - law schools look for students who have the ability to write and understand legalese. A background in communications and journalism is a great precursor to law school.

Good luck!

Having a BA is a plus, but you will need to learn the basics of being a paralegal. You could probably take a few paralegal courses at your local community college. If you know someone who is a paralegal, ask the person which were the 2 most useful courses he/she took. Sign up for those.

Good luck.

Yes I would think that any communications field would be helpful. You can either attend a formal paralegal course or perhaps you can get hired on at a lawfirm to help without the training. Worth doing some "informational interviews" with some firms and even corporations. After all, you are a journalist, so use your skills!!!
