If you have talent and more importantly, you love doing it, keep doing it and don't stop. It's a tough industry to break into but don't give up. Keep putting your work out there, learn as much as you can, and one day, it will pay off. Here are some suggestions:

Look into some songwriting classes in your area and learn how to write different forms of music. Even if you never write them later, it will make you more versatile and add a different dimension to your rap. Find out what showcases or festivals are available in your area or an area you're willing to travel to and sign up...be seen and heard.

Also, looking into different competitions where you can submit your songs (International Songwriting Competition, USA Songwriting Competition, etc.) but beware of scams. If you join something called Sonic Bids, they will send out announcements of legitimate music competitions. There are a bunch of songwriting groups and webzines that you can join for more information on what's happening in the industry.

ASCAP and BMI have different classes, seminars, and scholarships that might interest you. However, most of their stuff is in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, or Nashville.

You need to get to a studio or buy the stuff you need to get a demo recorded. The Demo should be 2 or 3 songs and the best song should be track number 1. After you have the demo send it to local clubs that allow live local music to perform. Make sure you adderess it to the talent department of the venue and be sure to include you contact information. Alot of places need people to be openers for bigger acts. Once you have done a few shows you can start looking to get signed by a label or make a full CD and sell it on your own at your shows.

People don't make it on pure talent. You need to drive and determination. Something tells me starting by asking a question Yahoo!Questions isn't that place to start. Maybe write some songs and some hooks. Perform in public. Try and get some studio time. Get some investors behind you. Make a demo. Do something proactive.
