1. Were members of the Church of England but saw there were problems so they sought to "purify" it--hence the name.
2. They emigrated from England in 1630 and arrived in America that same year.
3. They came here to build a "city set upon a hill" (a Bible commonwealth) to show the world what a shining example of Christianity they could be. They failed miserably.
4. They were NOT as Hollywood and 5th-grade history textbooks often depict them. The did NOT always wear black and white. They painted their homes multicolors, wore colorful clothing, drank alcohol in moderation, dated, had sex for enjoyment rather than just for procreation, danced, and enjoyed life in general. However they WERE obsessed with not wasting time and they even outlawed celebrating Christmas in the 1690s because it wasted too much time.
5. It was the Puritans that were behind the various witch scares, hunts, and trials--the most famous of which was held in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692.
And there is your answer from someone that actually took the time to write an anwer rather than those who don't know so they simply cut and paste a response from Wikipedia.

The Puritans held five basic beliefs.
Total Depravity: By virtue of the original sin of Adam, when one is born, he has no right to salvation.
Unconditional Election: Some are chosen for salvation, some are not. There is nothing one can do to change his status.
Limited Atonement: The extent to which one can please God with acts is limited.
Irresistable Grace: God showers one with a quality of grace, and one cannot resist it.
Perseverance: Once one has been saved, nothing he does will change that fact.
These central beliefs, along with an extreme emphasis on preaching and the laws contained within the Bible itself formed the strict ideals of American Puritanism.

They don't drink alcohol. They only bonk when God tells them. They have a habit of wearing clothes from 500 years ago. They know nothing else but but the bible. Their brains are addled.
