I'm thinking of upgrading my computer and I just want to upgrade one or two parts at a time. What should I start with?

Here's what I have now:
ASUS A8N-SLI Motherboard (939 slot),
AMD 64 FX-55 processor,
1 Geforce 7800 GTX graphics card,
2 GIG Corsair RAM,
Westerdigital hard drives (SATA connected),
500w powersupply.

My first thoughts are to just go for a new motherboard and the new Intel duel cores but I wanted to see what you guys thought. I mostly use my computer for gaming. Thanks for the help.

Steven

The hard drives are 150gig and I think 10,000 rpm. Yeah, I forgot about the fact that most games are up to speed with the whole duel core thing. If I stick with the FX-55 and upgrade my power supply and video card will I come across any (can't think of the word) backing up of information throught the processor?
Basicly is the will that processor keep up with the latest video cards?

I suggest you buy a new mobo + cpu

Get an Asus P5B-E with the Core 2 Duo : E6300

Your video card is ok until DX10 cards become affordable.

If you put in a new motherboard, you will have to buy a new copy of (presumably) XP, because XP doesn't support motherboard changes. Otherwise, your computer is excellent. Maybe get a DvD writer or a Blu Ray burner. You can also upgrade the graphics to the 8800 GTX.

How big are the hard drives? Get the 10,000 RPM 150 gig western digitals.

Dual cores always speed up games, but limited. Pentiums with a fake dual cpu can work as well. The game runs on one cpu, the rest on the other (have assign it that way). NO lag as one suggested that only works on a p4 with fake 2nd cpu. Core 2 is the fastest.
The interesting question whould be why do you need to upgrade? Your system isn't exactly slow. www.tomshardware.com for benchmarks.

I'd go for a new motherboard and processor. But if I was you, I'd stick with AMD. I prefer their processors over Intels (have had both, and use an AMD in my own custom built PC). Maybe goes without saying that you'll need to make sure that the new motherboard will accept 2gb RAM, but apart from that, new motherboard and processor has to be the way to go surely.

yes all are excelent choices of hardware, since there is a bit debate about the dual core for gaming, since it will only come into effect if your doing a serious game like battlefield 2 and doing dvd burning at the same time. but most programs are not designed to run on dual or even quad core yet.

as for the hardware i would possible recommend upgrading to a 750watt if u want to go SLI with the 2x 7800's
since a friend of mine runs the 2x 8800GTX and uses a 1k watt power supply. since they are very power hungry

The dueos are not good at all for gaming. They tend to run the game off one processor alone and everything else off the other, so you are running off half power. It's a recipe for major lag, if you play MMORPGS. Pentiums still the best processor for gaming.
