I do lots of stone and brick. I can't answer without more info. What is column made of? Is there a ledge on bottom to hold the stone from slipping downward? How thick is the stone you want to apply? What shape are the stones, and are they flat on the back? Is column square or round? What size is the column?

What are the existing columns made of? that will make a big difference in how you approach this. there are adhesives and mortars and all kinds of choices. no matter what fixative you choose, you will have to find a way to temporarily hold the stones in place until that fixative sets up. ratcheting belt type clamps would be one way. you also don't say whether or not you want joints between the stones or not. too many possibilities and not enough info to go on. If you wish, you can email me at tootall1121@yahhoo.com and we can discuss it. put limestone columns on the subject line so i won't think it is spam, please.
