use a tier 3 car.
mod it to the max, i used a Corvette z06, i have used a Lamborginhi Murcielago before as well as a Shelby GT 500
just relax and keep it simple i.e. dnt over do it and attempt to take every shortcut. for the canyon just keep it simple and dont try to overtake darius, the audi has full stats. when your leading keep it simple and dont worry about where darius is and you'll be fine.

my word of advice is to use a rear wheel drive car i.e. corvette so you can slide easily aroud hairpin bends(sharp corners)

Choose a car class that you like.

The first time I beat it I used mostly tuner cars. My final tuner was the supra, it was somewhat difficult but easy. It's good if you like to handle corners without as much braking. The second time I played through I used the exotic class. I found it most easy out of all 3 classes as they had the most top speed, handling, and acceleration. Its a good class if you like to e break around corners and get lots of speed coming out of it.
Finally is the muscle class I just recently beat the game with this class. I would say it had just a little bit more difficulty than the exotic, but I beat it quite quickly. Its a good style if u like to have lots of speed at the expense of handling.

The 3 Best cars in the 3 classes are:

Musle- Cheverlet Corvette (Amazing acceleration and good handling for a musle)
Exotic- Mercedes SLR McLaren (Give time to get used to handling, but easily one of the best in Carreer)
Tuner - Skyline (Hugs the road, Amazing Handling)

But for your situation I would just get the Mercedes SLR McLaren, I found him easy on that. If your good at the game though go for the Corvette, on the Canyon duel I passed him in it.

I used Lamborghini Murciélago mod it to max and all in steering..
the trick is to handbrake and emergency break everytime when going in corners and such. when on clear corners go full gas
i tried it many times but you cant beat it without the shortcuts...
but be careful some routes have tight corners so dont go there
when on a starting line you may have a chance to use nitro to get pass him...

When on a canyon...
if darius is too close to you go block his way and bump on you...
