Issues: Curfew, dating, chores, etc. We care about the girl like our own kid, so why wouldn't we have the same rules to protect her? Is this appropriate?

As a landlord renting out a room you do have the right to make rules. If your renter doesnt agree with them she has the option to move out. I know if it was my home I would not like someone coming and going at all hours of the night or bringing people I dont know into my house. You can make the rules, but she has the right refuse and move out as she is an adult.

She is a renter, not your daughter, sure you love her as a daughter, because they are friends, she gives you money for rent. There are certain rules that she has to abide. You cannot control who she should date. She is a legal adult. Giving under circumstances you could have a curfew, say no visitors after 11pm. because you need to sleep, or have quiet time. Your daughter and her friend should discuss chores. I don't know your living situation...are they in the basement suite? are they upstairs where your bedroom is?
All sit together and discuss everything rent, bills, chore lists, reasonable curfew (remember they are both adults) write up an agreement, and sign it in front of a notary public. Don't tell your friend's daughter who she should date.

If she is renting a room she should follow the rules of your house. That is one of the stipulations of being able to rent a room from a friend's family- the rules go with it too. If she doesn't like that situation she can find somewhere else to live. Explain that you care about her and you have those rules there for her protection.

yes, I would say most of the same rules should apply. I think she should fully expect rules regarding curfew, chores, and behavior in the home. However, because she is not your daughter, I'm not sure it is your place to tell her who she should date as long as she follows all the other rules.

Is she a teen? Then yes, she needs rules.

My brother lived with my mother forever! He had some rules. He paid rent. He needed to keep his room clean, clean up after himself and even let our mom know if he thought he wasn't coming home for the night. So, she wouldn't worry. Plus, some odd jobs around the house.

And, he was 30 something still living with mommy dearest. ;)

As long as she lives under your roof and you are responsible for her then you have to set rules-whatever rule your daughter has to follow so should she. She isn't a guest because she's going to be living there and she needs boundaries.

If you treat her as your own then the rules should be the same. Yes it is appropriate.

its your house and your rules i would sit them both down and tell the "friend", we have rules our daughter follows because she still resides in our home, and we would lik to set the same for you except for the dating one "you can not tell someone else's child (19-legal age), how to date and who to date .....your house your rules though
