I have a job opportunity in Scotland. But I am afraid of the Scots. What can I do? I am afraid of their accent and if they are patient with me as a foreigner. What do you think? I am really afraid!

You can give me the job! Just kidding. You will be fine...just explain that you have just moved there; you'll find the Scots to be friendly, warm and welcoming.

The first question I would ask is why are you afraid of the 'Scots'?. The accent is no excuse!! I don't know where you are from...but YOU will have an accent, but, I don't think the Scots will be afraid of it ..or you. They are the most friendly people in the whole of Britain and as long as you're not a big mouthed, arrogant Southerner (which they recognise instantly) then you will be in safe hands. I know many English people who visited Scotland and never came back!!. There are a few anti English racists but there are more anti Scots racists in England and I fear that you have been influenced. Go!!! and you will find out how nice they are.

I dont know where you hale from or even if you are male or female?
Not that it really matters, I am a Scot and proud of it, my problem was that I spent , a lot of time in England and lost my Scots accent, whenever I go into a pub in Scotland I have to take a bit of stick, and deservedly so! But I can give as much as I take, so that doesnt worry me much!
I have worked a lot all over Scotland, and most of the UK and overseas. I can honestly say that the Scots are the friendliest people out of the lot, I am really biased against the English because of the history thing, but I am really an odd man out in Scotland, most folk there intermingle very well.
I know the accent is very gutteral and maybe the general opinion is that the Scots are always looking for a fight, but as a Scot myself even with my off key accent, I got on very well and I'm sure you will also, good luck to you go for it, the more of the world and its people you see the better!
Just as a little footnote , the Scots seem to be more interested in fighting each other rather than fighting England , if that was not the case then England would have been ours by now. As an example of that I was having a bit of banter with a local guy in a pub in Aberdeen , he heard my accent and was taking the pi*s, I gave him a few verbals back and informed him I was in fact a Scot and not English!! He gave me one of those Scots glares and snapped "Where is it you are from then? I replied "I was born in Glasgow" he immediatly snapped back "Bloody hell thats worse than being English"!!!! He wasnt joking!
Please dont let this little story put you off, Scotland and its people are the best in the world. check it out for yourself.

It is the SCOTCH you should be afraid of, as it gets people drunk. :)
It sounds like what you are really afraid of is how you will fit in to a new place. It is always scary to start a new job anywhere. When you add to that the new location and the pressure of moving, well it is very understandable. The thing is that THEY believe you are good at what you do, or they wouldn't offer you the job. So, go, and be honest with people. Think about it. If someone came to you, and said, I have just started working here, and I am a little bit scared about how I'll be received, what would you say to them?
I am sure that you would try to make that person comfortable and feel at home. The Scottish people are well known for their warmth and friendship.

They are the red necks of Europe. Go ahead and get into the groove of pup hopping with them and sing songs with them that sound patriotic while stomping on the floor. Otherwise, if you sit there and try to understand them, they will talk even faster and get off on the fact that you can't understand a word they say while throwing insults your direction.

I'M KIDDING. I'm type casting. Actually, I'm half Scot from my father's side and love dancing to the bag pipes. Stetzel and Kellog both have a clan kilts on my fathers side.

If you are German you will understand the accent very well, it's more like German than English to some people.

The Scots can be a bit brusque and abrupt but they are the best people on the planet. Make a friend with a Scot and you have a friend for life.

The Scots are wonderful people, they have a great country with some magnificent scenery and if you have a career opportunity there, why not try it yourself? But, on the other hand, if you are frightened then only you can make that decision.
