TV and newspaper advertising are a way of informing the public of goods/services provided by a company.
Yellow pages are there to make life easier for the consumer who is looking for a particular service (e.g. plumber, electrician or hairdresser) or type of goods (e.g. furniture, pet supplies etc)
Billboards are there to attract your attention whilst on the underground, bus or whilst walking and are cleverly designed to appeal to our subconscious.
Advertising/marketing/public relations experts are also experts in psychology and know how to use colours etc to appeal to the public. There is a lot more to this topic than meets the eye.

Ha. That will take hours to talk about.

The answer to the first question about what are ads, is that they are all forms of marketing and ways that companies use to sell their products.

I never had a public relations class, per say, so I can't answer that question fully. I would check out a public relations book on that.
