my dad did that job - the rest of the year he repaired roads & pavements, cleared spillages, kept the roadside drains clear, removed fallen trees & other debris.....highways maintenance.

Often times the guys that drive the salt trucks and plows during the winter are either road workers (repairing potholes, paving streets, painting lines, etc) during the rest of the year or landscapers (planting trees, mowing grass, etc). I drove a plow/salter for 6 years during snowstorms, the rest of the time I was spraying pesticides on lawns and trees for insects and weeds. :-)

They work for the highways dept in the main doing maintenance work.Very often they drive the refuse lorrys,drain cleaning tankers or work in the gardening dept.They are deployed to the highways dept on overtime if they are lucky

Most are city or county employees & this is just a job that was assigned to them for the day or how ever the dole out responsibilities
