use our umbilical cords (after giving birth) for stem cell research? They don't have us sign any waivers....shouldn't this be our decision?

From experience, when I enter the hospital to give birth their is no waiver to sign in the state of pennsylvania. As a matter of fact the only document I signed was for the birth certificate...and my release form.

Either donate or not. The research companies pay people because that person is putting in time and putting themselves at risk for what they're doing... taking pills, medications, etc...

It would be part of the waiver that the mother signs when she goes to the maternity ward. It is in there. If you don't want to donate it, fine...it'll go in the trash bin instead of being used for research. By the way, I donated both of mine from my two girls. It WAS an option! Why should they pay you? You get paid for research when it is something they take that they normally wouldn't. If you're gonna have a procedure and under the circumstances for that procedure the doctor can gather tissue samples for research analysis, they do not have to pay you because they would have the tissue anyway. If you don't want them to use it and they would like to, say so on the form.

Um...when they bank umbilical cord blood, it's the mother's choice alone, so YES, they DO sign a waiver, and you're not paid for it because there is no disadvantage to you at all, whatsoever.
