If your mp3 file is on iTunes, then you can right-click on the song, select "Get Info." Then click on the tab that says "Options." At the top of your little options window you should see something that says "Volume Adjustment." Move that little bar to the right. The song will be louder now.

MP3Gain will do it. I recommend a dB setting of no more than 95 or else you will hear clipping/distortion.

There's a tutorial and a link here: http://www.myspace.com/soundonthego

Don't use Audacity, it's not meant for volume normalizing. It has to decode and then encode again your MP3's and it will reduce their sound quality.

MP3Gain does not decode/encode the file, it goes directly into the compressed file to make the changes, and the process is completely reversible.

And yes, it's free.

You should also buy yourself a pair of isolating earphones as well. Turning up the music too loud on your MP3 Player to drown out ambient sounds is a great way to ruin your hearing.

If you email the guy at myspace, tell him the music you like, your budget, etc. He'll make a recommendation. Or you can just read is budget earphone reviews.

You can use the free program Audacity to increase the level on an mp3. No spyware or adware come with it.Dont download the beta as it still has bugs in it. Go with the older version for now.One of the optional downloads that comes with it is the LAME MP3 encoder - Allows Audacity to export MP3 files. You need that to export files to mp3. See the second link.

Its not the computer but the music youd ownload. Next time you download a song choose one with a wav. sign this is louder other than any song. or you can rip it to copy the song to your PC as is. It may take longer but probably the songs will have a better sound quality.
