There is a spot at the end of world 1-2 right before the pipe that leads to the flag that you have to do some acrobatics around. Check out he youtube video below and just mimic what they do. Note that you have to be Super (big) Mario or Fiery Mario to do this. It doens't work with small Mario. Also, this can only be done in the NES versions of the game. The Wii virtual console copy of SMB is the original NES version, so it does work on there too.

I have heard that jumping over any flag will get you there. I think it can be done in most levels with the cloud guy that throws the spikies.
