He has nothing to apologize for so why should he.

To me Muslims right now have a lot of PR work to do in order to make me think they are the religion of peace.

yes he was right, in fact he had to appoligised to them, no body has the right to insult others religion without presenting facts, and what the Pope said was taken from some diary not from Islam, and so he just told an opinion for another one as his opinion, besides Muslims believe that they are not allowed to insult any religion especially Christians and Jews, they believe in Jesus and in his message and if any one of them dare to insult Jesus or his religion he wont be consider a Muslim any more by them, if the Pope didn't recognize that he was wrong then why did he appoligise?
please people get some knowledge about Islam before talking about it, that makes u look stupid...
www.sultan.org u may find something that would help u understand what Islam is
Peace be upon u

Everybody has the right to an opinion; just because the Pope is a leader, his words are taken as being more significant and representative of the people he leads.

If the words he spoke were just simply the words of someone who died many years ago, then he is at best guilty of quoting literature. An apology is NOT required!

Right on bro.

He was right to apologise but the essence of what he said was 100% correct. The Koran does actually say something like "Put to the sword all those unbelievers".

The other part of the quote "show me what is new about Islam" is equally valid. All Abrahamic religions have similar views, Islam offers little that is new.

Islam is a perfectly good religion but like other religions (including Christianity in its time) extremism has taken hold instead of tolerance and understanding.

These are dark days for the Muslim world.

To me, truths of a religion should be self-evident. There shouldn't be any need to be violent to, or intimidate anybody to get them to see what you deem to be true.

If he thought that he was right in making his initial statement about Islam (which many Muslims took as an insult), then I don't think that he should have backed off from his earlier statement because of political pressure. Was he admitting that the remarks of an earlier pope, whom he was quoting, were wrong?

if the Muslims insulted the popes faith do you think he would be quick to ask for an apology of course he would. everyone has their own beliefs and i think its wrong for anyone to insult another about their faith.sexuality colour or creed.

Here is a link to the English translation of the Pope's controversial speech: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/speeches/2006/september/documents/hf_ben-xvi_spe_20060912_university-regensburg_en.html

In my opinion, although what the Pope said was true, he said it in the wrong way to the wrong people.

If you are going to give a constructive criticism to your neighbor (Islam) then you should do it to his face not behind his back.

The Pope's speech used Islam as a bad example of "faith and reason" to a group of Catholics when he probably could have found a better bad example in Catholicism.

Therefore it was appropriate for the Pope to apologize.

With love in Christ.

What insult? He told it like it is, and the Radicals went apes**t over someone speaking the truth.
I think he should never have entertained any thought of apology.
