Gold fever was basically the term used for someone who was crazy about the idea of finding gold. In those days there were lots of advertisements for being able to find lots of gold in California. Basically a get rich quick scheme. In reality if the person would have been reasonable and thought realistically they would have seen the "too good to be true" line in it. But rather than do that they would make foolish choices about their lives and family putting everything in jeapardy there for having "gold fever". Basically it was like signing a loan for a Mercedes Benz expecting to win the lottery to pay for it. Not likely to happen.
