...the top five media markets in the United States would not have a team in the playoffs (Houston doesn't have a team).
How does Gary Bettmann expect the NHL to gain a foothold in the United States when the biggest markets in the United States have lousy teams? In the case of Los Angeles and Chicago, this has lasted for years and decades respectively. Why does Bettmann keep banging his head against the wall?

The only thing Bettman is responsible for is expansion, which spreads the talent too thin. He is not responsible for those big market teams being terrible. That responsibility lies with the owners, general managers and coaches of those teams. The players on that team are also responsible. Now there's a salary cap everybody is on the same playing field....No excuses any more. I don't think it's all on Bettman!!!!!

In response to Richard, some of those foreign players put a lot of people in the stands and are some of the best players in the league.....Jagr...Ovechkin.....If they're good enough they should be there..

Gary Bettman has ruined this game and he needs to be out to many teams to fast and that really hurt the game.

Richard>>>>there more European in the NHL cause there better then the American players.

rinkrat>>>.NJ Devils are a very small market team, they never sell out, just because there in the NY area doesn't mean nothing. where talking hockey market.

I don't understand what your question is here. You're obviously upset at Bettman but you don't say why (unless you think he is either supposed to throw games to the Kings and Blackhawks or that it is HIS responsibility to make them competitive, not THEIR management). Furthermore, last I checked the standings the New York Rangers and Anaheim mighty Ducks "from those small rural areas?" WOULD be making the playoffs. Can you clarify your question or at least suggest what Bettman SHOULD be doing that he is not?

Good question, what's your answer! Should the smaller market teams give their best players away to the "top 5"? Or should we just wait it out as, it is cyclical. The Rangers and Devils have won recently, and Chicago is showing signs of returning to the upper echelons. They were contenders 10-15 years ago.

Um. WHAT are you TALKING about? Three of the five largest markets have teams in the playoffs right now.

The very largest market, NY, includes New Jersey and is 2nd in the East.

The 2nd largest market, LA, includes Anaheim, which is 1st in the West.

The 5th largest market, the San Francisco Bay Area, includes San Jose (5th in the West)

Atlanta, the 9th biggest market, is 3rd in the East.
The 10th biggest market, Dallas, is 6th in the West.
The 11th biggest market, Detroit, is 4th in the West

6 out of the top 10 US markets have an NHL playoff team as of today, when only 9 have teams. 6 out of 9? I'd say that's doing pretty freaking well.

The NHL is way overextended. How many teams are there now? 30? 40? Do we need major league teams in such hockey hotbeds as Phoenix, Nashville, Columbus? Maybe a cap on foreign players per team would help, too. Not to sound xenophobic, but there are too many foreign players with unpronounceable names for the common American fan to get more interested in the game.
