They can if they're just talking about it on the show (ie. "The Super Bowl is in two weeks"). However, they can't use it for promotions or advertisements unless they're an official sponsor (ie. "Be the 10th caller on Wednesday and win tickets to the big game").

The NFL trademarked the term "Super Bowl". You can say it as long as you're not profitting by using the name. Basically, you can't use it in a commercial.

I not sure about "World Series" but I know it's the same way with "Final Four". The NCAA owns the trademark. I work in radio and about 7 years ago I was working in Indianapolis where the NCAA is headquartered. We were using "Final Four" in a promotion that we were doing and we had to change it because their lawyers sent us a cease and desist order.

I think it's because the NFL trademarked the term Superbowl. It's ridiculous but that's what happened! So that's why in many ads, they say "The Big Game".

Superbowl(TM) is a trademark. That's why print, TV, and radio ads refer to the big game instead.

"Super Bowl" is a trademarked name. In order to legally use it, you must pay the NFL, the holder of the trademark, or obtain their permission to do so.

The NFL has a long standing reputation as being uncooperative. Anyone using the term without permission will usually find themselves in court.

Some can, but you have to pay to use the name "Super Bowl." By saying the "big game" everyone knows what you are talking about and do not have to spend any cash
