My kids will always come first and my parents don't live around here so I don't have a grandparent that I can leave either child with. So, when daycare won't accept one of my children I have to call in. My husband can sometimes work his schedule around it. My co-worker gets really upset and says things to me when I return to work. What can I do about this? I work in a law office and everybody here gossips about everybody. Are there any jobs out there where it is okay for woman to call in sick.

This is why moms work best in offices where the bosses and very senior employees have kids. (For instance, if the new lawyer has a secretary who's sixty-two with kids and grandkids, the secretary might be able to stick it to the boss with a certain amount of logic and compassion. No lawyer worth his/her salt will argue with a good secretary!)
The first rule is always- "You teach others how to treat you." But in this case, you need to know that management will back you up.
So, if you have bosses who happen to be new-school parents themselves (men whose wives worked, moms themselves, etc.) then you need to speak to them and advise them that you intend to say something to this woman, and that you will need their back-up in case there are repercussions.
If not, you need to deal with it till you find a new job!

I wouldnt worry about what a coworker thinks. It's only what the boss thinks that matters. your coworker is the one with the problem so why are you making it yours? If the coworker wants to stress out over it let them, but why should you? You need to see this from a different perspective. Your dealing with a control freak who WANTS to upset you. Ok so dont play that game. Know you did what you had to do and as long as it is not a problem with the boss then you are ok. If the coworker chooses to be anal about it then let them. Meanwhile you go on with your work and forget what they think. Why would you even care what a retard like that thinks?

It's like that with everyone that doesn't have children. Some people just hate it when others can do something for a reason that they don't have - like calling out due to sick children. They're just jealous that you weren't at work and they were.

In Spokane, WA there is a daycare that accepts sick kids. But I don't know if that is just a setup for disaster because your kids would be around other kids. But you can check to see if there is something similar in your town ... just incase.
