FIRST things first, before you get online and start surfing around, replace your IE browser with Mozilla Firefox. You can get it at www.getfirefox.com. After you set it up, use ONLY this browser to surf the web.
Second, go to www.download.com and download and install Ad-Aware and Spybot: Search and Destroy. You should run these each for a full scan once a week. Also, if you get a virus/trojan that screws up your internet it is best that you already have these downloaded.

First thing is: If you did not purchase an anti-virus along with you PC, open up msconfig, goto the startup tab and uncheck EVERYTHING!!! Most computer co put so much crap in the startup that pc's are running I'd guess 25% slower without you even doing anything.
