Quarks make up protons but there is so far no experimental data about what makes up a quark, however there is a theory called 'string theory', which proposes that inside a quark are vibrating particles similar to strings, like on a violin for example. This is the fundamental making of everything! Imagine the whole universe boiled down to vibrating particles. This is just a theory but an article appeared in 'The Economist' and would be an interesting read for you.

it sounds like you are looking for a basic elementary particle that makes up everything. there is no one thing that fits this description. in the past, there was an attempt to answer this question that came up with the idea of quarks. quarks are not a valid answer. there are things that contain no quarks. different things are made up of different elementary things.

It's quarks all the way down. As strange as it seems from up here, it has its charm. And to top it off, there is no bottom.
