Is it possible to have a coughing attack while in a deep sleep? I have a persistant cough (since 3 days ago) and it is keeping my roommate awake at nights, however, I am sleeping fine, and do not recollect these "coughing fits." Am I just sleeping through them? I tend to be a sound sleeper in general. She requests that I go sleep on the couch, as to not wake her. I think that this request is absurd. Help!?

I wake myself up coughing all the time. It is very possible to cough in your sleep. Coughing is an involuntary action. Yes, there are times when you can make yourself cough because you have an itch in your throat or such... however most of the time it is involuntary so therefore means you can cough at any time. Sleeping or otherwise. Take some Robitussin. That's my favorite cough medicine. It tastes like holy hell but it coats your throat pretty well.

Yes, it's possible to have a coughing attack while sleeping. It could be that you're coughing, waking up slightly, and not remembering it the next day. I would imagine that someone needs to be sleeping on the couch if it's disturbing sleep, but you two have to work that out between yourselves.

Hope you feel better soon.

It shouldn't harm the baby. It could be asthma, if it is an unproductive cough, no pain. Asthma manifests in different ways. In an asthmatic cough, the exhale is cut short by coughing, so your lungs don't empty all the way; and thus you can't fill them completely with new air. If that's what this feels like, it is probably the asthma.

Yes, my grandson was coughing a lot when he was asleep, and it was waking me up..in the next room.. I took him to the doctor and found he had bronchitis. After medication, he no longer coughs in his sleep.

Maybe your roommate is having hearing fits. Do her a favor and utilize the couch.
