I would go for someone like Mark Ramprakash or Graeme Hick ~ both so profilic in first-class cricket yet didn't really perform for England.

Ramps, Hick, John Crawley? Uzman Afzaal? Vikram Solanki? All five play fantastic first class cricket, but could never quite shift that brilliance into the test match arena. None of the five mentioned players are particularly flamboyant, whereas Kevin Peitersen, who is as flamboyant as you get, has taken to the five day game like a duck to water.

Andrew Strauss. He averaged just a mere 24.7 from the five Ashes test matches. IMO, he was one of the worst on the field.
