It depends on whether you are a contract employee or an "at will" employee. If you are an "at will" employee then your employer can fire you at any time for any reason.
However, most employers won't do this since it could embroil them in legal battles they would rather avoid even if they would win. Employers should spell out disciplinary steps, reasons for immediate dismissal and include a statement that they are an "at will" employer in an employee handbook. Employees should be signing a statement that they have read the information in the handbook.
If you are a contract employee or union member then you should check the stipulations of your contract or talk with your union representative.

It really depends on your boss. I mean, if he's understanding and this job in North Carolina is pretty important, then I see why not. Some bosses are not as understanding and if you asked for a day off just to go work someplace else for a day, then obviously he would fire you or not let you have the day off. I guess it also depends on the job you have and the one you are going to North Carolina to work at for a day. If you hardly ever get a day off, then maybe it could be like he owes you one and just say that you want the day off for personal reasons of some sort.

But since you didn't provide more information, its relatively hard to give you the best answer.

You can be fired for anything, but it depends on the state as to whether it'll hold.
In NY, there is usually a three-month probationary period. They can let you go for any reason, definitely.
Now, after three months, there are laws. You need to written up three times, and three times for the SAME THING. So, if you're late once, curse off a client another time, and neglect to clean up the entire pot of coffee that you spilled on an already slippery floor, you CANNOT BE FIRED unless you have done each of those things three times, been caught, and been written up for it.
most people know about the three-write up rule around NY bynow, but not about the THREE times for EACH strike!
So, as you see, the only research you can really trust is legal journals, lawyers, etc. Unemployment will know!
Good luck.

In most states they can fire you for just about anything. That said, most bosses (if you are in good standing with them) would not have a problem with this if you take a vacation day and the work you are doing doesn't compete with their company in any way.

not if your not on the paperwork at the other job as far as legally employed...did you have to fill out another application and give ss #, if not - who says your working there...plus - it takes 2 jobs for alot of people to get by on these days...unless you employer has a moonlighting policy..i wouldnt worry about it...just dont take undeserved days off for the other job or you may get fired for attendance reasons

Why would you be fired? It is a vacation day..they can't ask you where you're going or what you're doing....you don't have to tell them anything.

Your vacation days are yours to use as you please, what you do while using a vacation day is none of there business. You have obviously earned the days and whether to choose to actually go on vacation is your concern.
