I actually have a 12" and I love it because I take it everywhere. You can use it comfortably on planes, in cars, etc. My girlfriend has a 17". It's great for watching movies or playing games, but it's really big when compared to mine. If your planning on lying in bed or sitting on the couch with it, 17" is probably going to be a bit big and heavy. In this case you may want to go with the 15. If you're planning to use it at a desk or sit it on a dresser to watch movies, then the 17 is cool. I would recommend going to a store to have a look so you can see just how small a 14 really is and how big the 17 is.

I’ve a 14” at the moment; I think the size suits me. The size it’s just right, and it isn’t very heavy, so it’s portable enough. I found 17” very big, and it’s difficult to carry it, it’s heavy, and also there is less options for carry bags. If you’re using it at home, a 17” screen will make easier the transition from PC to laptop. But be sure that it’s a much heavier.

As most of the posts claim 'bigger is better'. The only drawback to big is the fact that the case for the laptop has to be at least as big as the screen.

It all depends on how portable you want it to be. Keep in mind, LCD screens are a lot clearer than CRT's, so you don't necessarily have to have a huge one to be able to see waht you are doing - you can always adjust the resolution to make it easier to read.
