Spain has rocketed from being a poor country where women gossiped around the village pump to a sophisticated, modern EU member state. It has moved from being a country where there was no freedom of speech to one where people express their views confidently. There's just too much material to work from!

Spain got left behind other European countries becuase it was devastated by the Spanish Civil War of 1936 - 1939. Following this, Franco's oppressive dictatorship stiffled cultural development (e.g. in relation to 60s pop music). It also had difficulty in trading economically until the West, led by the USA who wanted to add Spain to the Western block even if it was Fascist, made trading agreements in the early 1950s.
Following Franco's death in the 1970s, Spain has become a democracy in which people have greater freedom both intellectually and to engage in economic activity. Spain has become integrated in NATO and the European Union. The EU in particular enabled Spain to catch up with the rest of Western Europe as Southern Spain's warm climate was advantageous for crops like tomatos whilst areas in the North, notably Barcelona, were attractive for European investment as they had a long industrial tradition but cheaper wages than, say, France or Germany. In the 1980s and 1990s the EU pumped a lot of money into Spain and Portugual for things like road building - Spain previously had a chronically bad transport infrastructure.
