there were more than just 1, but the 'grand daddy' of them all was the galvaston, tx in 1900. back then, they had no idea how powerful that storm was going to be until it was too late. they didnt even have names for them until much later.
then u had the 1938 labor day hurricane that smacked the florida keys. this 1 blew a train off the tracks that was trying to do a rescue attempt.
then u had a hurricane that would even give meteorologists nightmares: camille in 1969. winds in this storm was the most powerful ever seen in a hurricane, winds close to 200 mph, practically unheard of in that time.
andrew was another bad 1. it put a vicious beating on dade co. and homestead, fl where it moved in.
so far, katrina is on par with the title camille holds. katrina did alot more damage than camille only because katrina hit a populated spot almost dead on. camille had much stronger winds. if katrina had camille's winds, they'd still be tryin to fix the levee's.

As far as loss of life it would have to be the great hurricane of 1900 which came ashore in Galveston bay Texas killing as many as 8 - 12 thousand people with very little warning. There is a great book on this storm came out a few years ago. Sorry I can't seem to locate it on my shelf or remember its name, but its highly recommended reading.
But as far as the psyche of the country goes I would have to agree that it is Katrina without a doubt. The damage in New Orleans parish alone was greater than the entire track of the 1900 storm which drove north all the way to Iowa before turning eastward and not leaving the country before traveling through Canada. It did the majority of its damage both physically and otherwise in Texas proper.

It is most probably Hurricane Katrina because it was proven to be an extremely dangerous storm and already ranked as the worst in history.

Worst in terms of $$$, maybe Katrina or David. But I think Camille was the biggest and most powerful.

I suspect it is the one that hit Galveston Texas in about 1900. I don't know the name of it, but I believe it killed about 8,000 people. Of course, in those days, they had little or no warnings.
