I believe that the reason people cannot agree on this topic, is that it is in fact a faulty argument. By stating that an embryo or fetus become "human", or becomes "alive" at a specific point you are implying that it was "not human" or "not alive" before this point. This goes against common sense, as even an unfertilized egg or sperm cell retains at least some characteristics that uniquely qualify it as either human or alive.

I don't think anyone would argue against removing a woman's ovary to save her from cancer, even though that ovary theoretically contains thousands of unborn children.

The philosopher Thomas Hobbes argued that most of what we consider "moral" reasoning is actually based on sentiment, or emotional impulses. In other words, many of our "moral" judgments that some action is "wrong" are based more or less on our "gut feeling" rather than any self evident truths about the situation. For example, our gut aversion to killing another human being, is not because it is always unreasonable to do so, but is a result of our fear of both risking serious injury, and being alienated from society.

Even the morality of "doing the greatest good for the greatest number of people" may be largely sentimental. Especially since real world problems cannot usually be satisfied by this kind of reasoning alone.

Now, I'm not saying that we should abandon morality, or social responsibility. Even though moral reasoning may be largely a product of self interest, acting in our own long term self interest is in fact reasonable.

Most people believe that it begins upon conception, others when there is brain activity. But the real answer is when the mother becomes aware of it, just as the tree in the woods argument.
