I use Gerber, but if your choice is between those two, I would recommend Nestle.

I started giving apple juice to my son when he was about 5 months old. Although pediatricians recommend starting orange veggies first, so try starting carrot juice, then mix it with a little apple juice, then go ahead with apple. I wouldn't even dilute it, just don't give too much.

Nestle Baby Cereal

I used Gerber and Heinz baby food when my son was small. I've never seen Nestle baby food. I usually just bought what was on sale or made my own occasionally. As for the apple juice: doctors don't reccommend it until the baby can drink it from a cup. But everyone gives it to them sooner. My son was probably about 4 months old when I gave him juice. I dilluted it with water some. I used it to make his cereal too. It's the only way he would eat it.

I prefer Gerber baby cereal--it's also what WIC uses and recommends. Apple juice is ok at about 6 months but only in very small amounts at first and be sure to water it down. Apple juice can work as a laxative on some babies so give sparingly.

I think all the brands of baby food/cereal are pretty much the same.
Any juice is usually introduced when solids are introduced and should be given only in a cup. I wouldn't give full strength juice but dilute it with water - 1oz juice and 2-3oz's of water. Juice is not a necessity but rather something that should be given when the cup is introduced. Breastmilk or Formula should be the main source of fluids at this age.

Baby cereal is nasty over processed garbage that I wouldn't feed to my dog. Seriously read the ingredients below and tell me you would eat it, let alone feed it to a baby:

Ingredients from Nestlé® Baby Cereal – Starter – Rice (add water[1]) :

*Rice flour (You know that brown rice is more nutritious than white rice because they remove germ and the bran which have more vitamins and minerals. For infant cereal they take white rice, remove even more of it, over cook it and then process it.)

*skim milk (broken down to be more easily digested)

*whey (milk protein which is what infants are allergic to in milk if they are allergic to milk. Lactose intolerance in infants is very rare[2])

*palm olien (modified palm oil)

*canola oil

*coconut oil

*oligofructose (to make it feel better in the mouth, also a sugar)

*sunflower oil

*Inulin(another kind of suger)

*ferrous fumarate (iron, generally only 4%-10% of synthetic iron is absorbed by children[3] and synthetic iron interferes with the absorption of iron from other foods and breastmilk. Starting any solids but particularly iron fortified foods before 7-8 months of age is linked to anemia in breastfed babies. Delaying solids until 7 months reduces anemia to almost 0[4])

*nicotinamide (vitamin B3)

*thiamine (vitamin B1)

*riboflavin (vitamin B2)

It strikes me that there are a lot of oils in that list. Makes me wonder how high oil would be on the list if they only used one kind.

If she really feels she has to start with carbs, which is silly our whole society is carb addicted, wonder why. You can make your own cereal by pureeing cooked grains. You can also buy oat bran at most bulk stores and it is already cooked and finely ground. Just add water.

I don't give my baby juice. He's 10 months old. Drinking from a cup is for thirst, eating is for taking away hunger. (Except of course breastmilk which does both)

I used nestle. My son had no problems with it. I started giving my son juice at 8 months. I'd dilute it 50/50 with water. I had a heck of a time when I weaned him because he wouldn't drink milk or formula.

MILUPA all the way. This brand always seems very popular since their is hardly any left on the store shelves and my daughter loves it. Especially the cereals with yogurt in them.
