For God's sake don't use sandpaper! you'll just make it worse. You need to contact a windscreen specialist who can professionally polish out the scratches. Look in Yellow Pages, or Thompson's Local. Don't worry, it shouldn't cost an arm and a leg!!

You can try some chemical based glass polishes which may be able to fill in lighter cracks and make it appear as though there is no scratch but really it's still there. To actually get rid of the scratches you need to either replace the windscreen or purchase a commercial grade glass polisher. You can find two types of polishers, one is a fully contained unit that will have a round polishing pad on the end and they are generally easier to handle but are expensive, the second type is just a drill bit with a polishing pad on it that you can attach to the end of any drill. Expect to pay about $100 for either polisher and another 1-2 hours of elbow grease to work the scratches out.

If you have fully comprehensive insurance...there might be an unfortunate accident and your windscreen was smashed...oops!

£50 excess - new screen.

Trying to polish out deep scratches is nearly pointless - light scuffing can be removed with glass cutting compound . jewlers rouge and a buff...and a lot of patience.

I'd check & see if your windscreen got smashed in half an hour:)

Had the same problem a few years ago. The only thing that worked was to replace the windshield. Glass compound did not solve the problem and the compound was done by a glass replacement company.

Use the metal polish BRASSO on the glass. Polish it off and the scratches will be gone. Some say toothpaste but I have never tried that

Take your car to auto glass or any windscreen repair centre and they will polish them out

Your insurance company are likely to pay for a glass specialise to come out to polish it as they do for chips etc. It's cheaper for them than replacing the screen
