It has been long believed that life started in Africa. However, the first documented cases of human inhabitation (rock cave paintings, pottery, literature) come from the Middle East. In fact, they lived around the Euphrates River and Tigris River. The rivers are in a basin which include Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq. In the history books this area is known as Mesopotamia.
The Euphrates supported our first civilization around 4000 BC, it was called Sumer.
And if you're biblical, the Holy book states that one of the four rivers that flowed from the Garden of Eden was named Perath. Perath is Hebrew for Euphrates.
And you have to understand that Mesopotamia was not the barren desert it is today. The two rivers supplied this basin with many wonders.
Have you heard of the Gardens of Babylon? Babylon is another civilization that sprung up in Mesopotamia. The Gardens of Babylon were beautiful and lush (in fact, they were so beautiful they are one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World). Just as the Nile River is beautiful and lush, so was the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers.
