Why do people try so hard to figure out other people secrets? Why does the unknown mystify us?

Like in mystery books authors write of themes based on secrets... why would an author choose to make that the theme of his/her book?

I love mystery books and murder mysterys. With secrets and deception. Because it is exciting.

The author knows that tapping into people's curiosity will get people's interest and get them to buy their books. Great way to make money!
