There are non whimsical reasons too.
First, there might be no intelligent extraterrestrials in our universe. We may be unique. The Rare Earth theory, which refutes Drake's equation, posits the possibility that we are alone in the known universe. Check this out:
"the Rare Earth hypothesis asserts that the emergence of complex multicellular life (metazoa) on Earth required an extremely unlikely combination of astrophysical and geological events and circumstances. The Rare Earth hypothesis is explained in detail in the book Rare Earth: Why Complex Life Is Uncommon in the Universe, by Peter Ward, a geologist and paleontologist, and Donald Brownlee, an astronomer and astrobiologist." [See source.]
The Rare Earth theory is not popular among scifi fans as you can imagine. But even if Drake's equation [See source.] is correct, the vastness of space is a formidable obstacle for person to alien or even radio/TV communication. It would take more than four years for radio communication (e.g., Internet over satellite) to reach Earth from the nearest star other than the Sun.
It would take way longer than that to actually travel in person (or in alien) over those distances. For example, at .5c (50% the speed of light), an alien ship would need more than eight years of travel to get here. And chances of traveling 50% the speed of light are remote given the amount of energy it would take to get to that velocity.

Because extraterrestrials, if they even exist, have no connection to Earth's Internet.

They have dial up Internet service and have been waiting 50 years now just for the phone signal to connect because of the speed of light. It's either that or the fact that don't exist around here.

perhaps we're seen as lesser beings...would you talk to an ant just b/c you could? are you really interested in what the ant has to say?
it seems like any alien civilization would have to be an old one...something that makes present-day humans look like we're still in the stone age. maybe we think too highly of ourselves (you are, after all, assuming we're worth talking to)
