I am renting in Pittsburgh, PA (somewhere near Oakland).
I have one roommate.
We want to spend around $400/mo.
We have never rented before.

Please don't direct me to some website either; I visited those! I am interested in real people's suggestions from experience.

I meant $400 from each of us, if that is unclear above.

Make sure you find out what is included/not included so you don't get hit with hidden costs (utilities, etc.). Ask them to tell you what those average added costs will be if they are applicable. You will also probably get hit up for deposits if you have low credit or have no credit established. Since you are near a big city, you may be able to shop around and leverage your buying power for some added perks (i.e. free cable for a few months, discounted rate, or new rental discount, etc.). Most importantly - based on my own experience...I would try and talk to other tenants who rent there to see what they like/dislike about the place. Another thing that would have helped me with some bad rentals I ended up with would be to visit the location at various times throughout the week and day/night to see what the atmosphere/noise level is...as you;d be surprised how many partying neighbors you may find you have if you don't spot check the place at night time.

$400 a month?!!!

Geez...rent out here for a 2Bd apt. is atleast $1100. So.Cal. sucks...

make sure there's sufficient parking, ask about utilities (gas, cable, water, electricity), washer/dryer....security deposit. stuff like that.

look for something with good closet and cabinet space, if not ur house will be hard to keep clean, and its also not good when u have a room mate if u have to go through a bedroom to get to the bathroom,
