Like the previous responder, I am from a generation that was taught to spell at school - spelling tests etc every week, and I was very proud of the fact that in 8 years of spelling tests, I did not get one word wrong.
I don't necessarily have a problem with people choosing to spell words "differently" among their friends and peer groups, but I do have a problem with it on public forums such as this. It can make messages very difficult to read, and I am far more likely to ignore a post, whether it is a question or an answer, if it is not spelled correctly, or if there is not at least an attempt to spell correctly. For those who may jump down my throat and say that this is not fair to dyslexics etc, may I draw your attention to the "Check Spelling" box at the top of the reply box. If you know your spelling is poor, or if you are just not sure, then use the facility.
With the example given, if the person asking the question had not explained in the first place that they meant "psych" when they said sike, I would probably not have been able to work out what they were getting at, probably thinking maybe they had simply missed a letter and meant spike, or had spelled the word like wrongly.
Call me old-fashioned, but I'm a fan of correct spelling, grammar and punctuation. Some of the posts on message boards these days may as well be in a foreign language for anyone over the age of 16.

Spelling of words follows certain rules evolved over time. Established spellings sometimes undergo changes due to popular usage and the new spelling gets accepted. New words come into being and new spellings too, due to technological advances (such as Internet and SMS). Today, people are so much short of time that they distort original spelling, and many dont realise this.
While change is the only constant thing in the world, if everyone starts using his/her own spellings for his convenience, then it creates chaos, misunderstanding and bewilderment.
I am of the 'old school' which was taught to be accurate in spelling, and this meant hours of hard work and frequent reference to the dictionary. It is due to the mental laziness of people that they are lax when it comes to correct spelling and this attitude, pardon my saying so, is despicable. I am all for new words, but let us keep the spellings intact. Due to practical considerations, if the spelling of a word needs to be changed, it should be acceptable.

I try to spell words correctly so I spell it "psych." I am not from this younger generation. When I was growing up, i was taught to spell. Now,that being said, I still make mistakes. When someone corrects me I appreciate it. It is unpleasant to be corrected in a rude manner but maybe it is that very rudeness that makes us take notice and amend our ways.
Just a little thought. I have learned MANY things from my adversaries.

Well, why are you telling us about it??

Are you semi-literate and proud of it?
