For a very long time, most people were sustenance farmers, and people used to work every day. The Jewish people (see Old Testament, Torah, or Tanach) started the idea of Sabbath, or taking off one day every week on Saturday. Christians took essentially the same idea and took off every Sunday.

Eventually, around the time industrialization truly began, you had mixed populations in larger towns, and many more people began working for others instead of themselves. Employers got the idea to give employees both Saturday and Sunday off. It didn't happen all at once. But once the government began to give employees both days, the expectation grew rapidly that for most jobs employees should have a full weekend.

The weekend is a combination of the first and last end of the week (1st and 7th days). It is an English invention, giving the two days off. That is why the expression "weekend" is used in France, instead of "fin de semaine" as in Quebec. The word "fin de semaine" is actually an incorrect translation, as it means the end - last of the week. Saturday is "fin" but Sunday is "début" (start).

It is a puritan thing, that showed up in england the earliest days of the us. For a long time sunday was a day of rest, due to religious reasons. However a puritan leader decreed that men shall also be given one day a week to work in his own interest, this at the time of course meant to tend his home or farm. Thats how it became two days.
