Not all *old* pennies are equal. You may have a rare or unusually *mint condition* penny. I recently found a 1940's penny worth $4 . If you are bent on getting rid of them, check your area for a local coin dealer. Always have a * witness * with you if you DO have something of value just as a precaution (especially if you are a child or very young person).

They are work one cent, regardless of date. What you heard is that the copper in those old pennies is worth just under two cents. However, it is illegal to melt down U.S. coinage. Anyway, it is also more expensive than it is worth.

New one on me... "A penny is a penny is a penny" I've always heard... unless you have one from the 1940's that was made from a shell casing, or a silver one from earlier than that.
