In the music industry, the term "commercial" means made to sell. So isn't all music produced by record labels, whether they're huge well-known labels or independent labels, technically commercial? Why is it that a certain segment of music is considered "commercial" if ultimately it's all made to sell? I have always been a little confused by this concept. I mean, does it only have to do with targeting a broad, large audience?

You're right in that even Bach Violin Partitas have commercial value. Music that is created purely for its artistic value can sell at the mall, but there is certainly an entire industry built around marketing music as a commodity or product. Commercial music is engineered and/or selected to have a broad appeal and artists are sought and groomed for their marketability. That doesn't mean all "pop" music is uninspired or mass-produced dreck. Some of it is artistic, even if it's not "pure art."

Remember, "commercial" means someone high up at the record company thinks it will sell...it has nothing to do with the musicians' own interpretation of their material. Obviously, when we go into the studio we hope other folks will like our material and buy it, but that can't be the primary reason for the creation of the music...

Comercial means " POP" orientated. Will this single rank in the top ten on albulm charts. Can we sell this single after it's life exspectancy to "NIKE" for air over one of their commercials. POP means popular. duh, but that means will grandma and mom and daughter Daphnie buy the same record? if its a pop record, yep. Grandma is not going out to buy a copy of SLIPKNOT I betcha. that's not commercial, thats called NICHE music. NICHE music is what keeps almost all indie labels a float. If your niche is large enough, you can go POP, but thats another story...

commericial music is targeted at wide audiences. Audiences that don't have any dicriminating musical taste that will buy anything that they hear many times. Its best to not be brainwashed by the radio and other mainstream culture and just listen to people who are making music fopr themselves and not to sell.
